Road to Talvisota and Back!

This post is about my thoughts on what lists to take to a two day tournament to be played in the middle of the winter. The second part will be more or less an AAR/picture dump.

First some details of the event. It is a Late War 1900 points 2 day tournament and you can bring two armies with you. One from the Axis and one from the Allied side. The army you'd be using in each round would be desided by your current standing and by your opponents army, that way you can get more Red vs Blue matches.

Needless to say as I have armies from both sides I was very happy to take this opportunity to take my tournament virginity from my Soviets! For the Soviets my option was easy enough: 359th Medium Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment from Desperate Measures.

Alas this was not meant to be... But about that later!

As for the Germans, it is much more complicated than just pick up the list I played in the last tournament and upgrade it to match the new points. Already from the start there were only two real candidates, Panzer Lehr panzerkompanie from Panzers to the Meuse or 2./512. sPzJgAbt from Bridge at Remagen. The real question is, what would the composition of these lists look like and which it would be...

Get ready as the Winter War is coming!

2./512. sPzJgAbt

This force is the most suited for sitting back and shoot the hell out of the enemy thanks to its long range guns, heavy armor and Defenders of the Ruhr speacial rule which gives you Always Defend ability. With Carius in its head and his special rule allowing him to hit everything without penalties is a perfect for artillery hunting or sniping other GtG gun teams. Also 5 heavy armor hulls forces the opponent to find away to flank you, for this threat there are the panzergrenadiers with their panzerfausts and MGs. Wirbelswinds to give supporting fire against infantry and take down those planes and our own plane to hunt enemy artillery.

Panzers to the Meuse - Lehr Panzerkompanie, first version

This force has the idea to close in fast and with 6 PzIVs to assault all dug in infantry. Backed by Panther to deal with armor. The PzIV are being followed by Aufklärungs to help pin the enemy with MGs and clear all that is left. Wirbelwinds to protect my tanks from the air and Pumas to keep all ambushes at bay. The Me 262 is a two edged sword as it can be used in the beginning but once we close in we lose the ability to use it.
With Aufklärungs special rule giving my PzIVs Spearhead and Pumas with recce move this force can close in really fast. Used with Always Attack rule you are sure to be able to get the first turn mort of the time and force the opponent to react rather than rule.

Panzers to the Meuse - Lehr Panzerkompanie, second version

Much like the first version this force is to close in fast but this time you have smoke and a unit to sit on your own objective. You also lose the Pumas AT9 but that is not a problem as they are only to screen you for ambushes. Also you'll have fewer half-tracks and so fewer MGs to use to pin enemy platoons before assaults.

359th Medium Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment

The Soviet force is being built around a core of tank hunters, a platoon of SU-100s to take out heavy armor and SU-85Ms to tackle mediums. These are supposed to stay back and lend their fire where it's needed thanks to their Cat Killer rule. Artillery is their biggest threat forcing them to move and reduce RoF. Recce is here to lift GtG and to assault in the wake of IS-2s if needed. They'll be working closely with IS-2s. IS-2s are the main hammer, with 5 hulls, escorts and turret rear MGs these are real assault monsters, just keep them safe from enemy AT fire. Lastly the indirect fire support, by limited IL-2 with cannons, rocket and bombs. This however creates a bubble where the attacking force can't go.
Tactics: hit them fast, hit them hard... once we get there... IS-2s moving 20cm per turn isn't that fast at all.

Any Last Words

My last thoughts before the tournament are quite mixed. I'm hoping to do ok with my selected list but I'm still very skeptic about it. It will hit hard but will it be enough?

The other thoughts are sadness and anger as I had some trouble with PC equipment at home. One of our external hard drives went hay-wired and lost its File System. It took me over a week to recover atleast some of the files from it. But boy am I happy as those happened to be almost all of the pictures,  including from our kid, that got recovered!! I'm very happy to know some IT and to have some amazing IT-knowing friends!!

All this forced me to abandon my thoughts of having two armies with me at the tournament as I just can't make myself to finish up those Soviet recon guys. I'm just too sad, too slow and unmotivated to paint infantry right now. So now I'm only going to go with the Germans.

But I think I'll end this text here and next one will be writen after the tournament and hopefully with a lot of pictures.

Thanks for reading!

Bitten by a Mid War Monster (AGAIN!)

Hi!

I've been bitten by a Mid War Monster (again!) and after BF publishing the new points limits for MW I started to update my older 1500 points MW list. As with the older list my idea was to go with a full armor heavy Panzer force. With both lists the plan is to rush and rush and rush. And die trying.

In the old list the plan was to put Rettemeier with the other PzIII platoon and 2iC with PzIV platoon and while 8-rads lifts GtG and PzIVs fire all they can on the enemy, the PzIIIs would berushing forward and trying to overwhelm one flank.

With the new list the plan is about the same except I'll have a platoon of 4 PzIIIs and Rettemeier rushing an enemy while PzIVs and Tiger give my forces some cover. I know the Tiger is not perhaps the smartest choice as it costs as much as a platoon of PzIIIs but its way too juicy when almost everything just bounces off its thick hide in Mid War.

I'm also trying to keep this as cost minimum as possible as I bet in friendly games I can use my Tiger I E with zimmerit and PzIV Hs as proxies. I have enough 8-rads too so that would leave me just 4 PzIII L or Ns (I like the non-schürtzen model more...), Rettemeier and the recovery Sd Kfz 9 Famo half-track to buy. But I think I could proxy the recovery vehicle too with a Sd Kfz 251 in friendly games.

AAR: Estonian 20.SS - Fusilierkompanie vs. 2./512.sPzJgAbt !!PIC HEAVY!!

The other day we had a training game with a friend to prepare and to familiarize him to his forces for the coming EGT.

Last time we played we had Breakthrough as a scenario and for this time we randomly selected a new one. Last match was a victory for the Estonians 6-1 and I was sure to give my friend a steep uphill struggle this time.

Mission: We rolled with a random generator (aka die) and got Hold the Line.

Forces:

Board & Deployment

Board from the side of 512.

2./512.sPzJgAbt

Estonians
1. Turn
Estonians make an all out attack throughout the sector.

Carius and 2iC open up. 2iC missing the pioneers and Carius claiming a victim from full SS-Grenadier platoon (First blood!)

2. Turn
Estonian advance continues and Tigers try to hit Carius and force him to join the Tiger platoon, only one hit and it bounces. Estonian air support targets the panzergrenadiers and pin them.

Carius and 2iC continua to fire, this time 2iC claims a victim from pioneers.
Carius fires at the Tigers but miss.

3. Turn
Estonians rush to the forest with tanks. One Tiger opens up on dug in panzergrenadiers and kills one team with a HE round

512 gets its first reserves, a Jagdtiger rumbles forward and shoots high and wide on the move.
Carius claims another victim from full SS-Grenadiers and 2iC shortens the life of another pioneer.
Tigers fight with Tigers but cause no damage!

4. Turn

Estonians rush through the forest with tanks and open up on Tigers destroying one. Hs129B pins the panzergrenadiers
Tigers assault the panzergrenadiers but cause no deaths but force them to fall back after failed motivation test (that 5+ save is a killer in assaults!).
Full SS-Grenadier (now redused) assaults the panzergrenadiers but is forcet to fall back with a bloody nose.

512 gets its second and last reserves. Carius retaliates and destroys a Tiger, 2iC shortens yet another pioneers life. Panzergrenadiers make their motivation test and are no longer pinned. Lonely Jagdtiger takes yet another high and wide shot... have they calibrated their sights?!

Pioneers and short SS-Grenadier platoon advance

A lot of fire coming

4 hits

And the Tiger burns

SS-Grenadiers lined up for assault

SS-Grenadiers pushed back

SS-Grenadiers have left the battlefield

Wirbelwinds arrive to aid Carius and 2iC

5. Turn
Tigers shoot a lot at Tigers and bails two, with one destroyed and no operational tanks the Tigers take a motivation test which they fail sending them packing. Yet again Tigers assault my panzergrenadiers but this time they are met with fire, one destroyed Tiger and one bailed stops the assault dead. Full SS-Grenadiers try to assault too but are beaten back by hail of MG fire. Short SS-Grenadier platoon makes its move and tries to assault with 1 team which is being killed by defensive fire.

Wirbelwinds come to aid 2iC and Carius. 2iC yet again shoots at pioneers. Carius takes out another Tiger and panzergrenadiers open up on full SS-Grenadiers. redusing them and forcing a motivation test which they fail. Short SS-Grenadier platoon is being shot down to 2 teams, they pass their motivation test. The last Estonian Tiger is being captured in the assault.

Tigers fire at Tigers
Tigers run away
Tigers take some panzerfausts

"Incoming!"
Pinned SS-Grenadiers and all that is left of the Tigers
At this point I ran out of power in my phone so no more pictures :(

6. Turn
At this point there is half strength pioneer platoon, few stands from short SS-Grenadier platoon and leIGs left from the enemy. Pioneers flame the wirbelwinds that have moved to protect Carius. 2 last members of the short SS-Grenadier platoon assault and are being killed in counterassault after panzergrenadiers receiving no hits.

Panzergrenadiers move up to take the pioneers head on and blaze them with MG fire, killing 1. 2iC and Carius kill 1 more forcing a motivation test which the pioneer pass.
7. Turn
In a last desperate action the pioneers try to assault the panzergrenadiers, they make it through the defensive fire but cause no hits in close combat so panzergrenadiers can jump up and mow down the pioneers in a few rounds of close combat Also the CiC of hte Estonians is lost in this melee. The last brave pioneer decides it's best to quit and leaves the battle.

In their own turn panzergrenadiers pour a lot of shots to the leIGs to no effect.

8. Turn
As the Estonians are below half strenght the last possible thing for them to do to stay in the game, company morale, 3+, but oh no it's too much for the Estonians and they flee the field of battle.

End

4-3 victory for 512.sPzJgAbt!

This was a close one. If my panzergrenadiers had stayed pinned when those Tigers assaulted I would have been slaughtered.
